Ying Xu
Biography
Xu Ying (b. Shanghai) graduated from the Affiliated High School and the Oil Painting Department of the Central Academy of Fine Arts, Beijing. She currently lives and works in Feuerthalen, Zurich, Switzerland.
Her practice is rooted in painting, which she approaches not only as a visual language, but as a way of engaging with structure, perception, and lived experience. Through the body, objects, and organic matter, her work examines how social and temporal structures are inscribed, maintained, and negotiated over time.
Rather than representing identity or emotion, Xu Ying’s practice investigates the conditions through which they take form. Repetition, intervention, and material interaction become means of tracing how structures shape the body and, in turn, how the body attempts to adjust, inhabit, and partially reconfigure them.
Her experience across cultural contexts informs a shifting perspective, allowing her to work between proximity and distance. This position is not expressed through narrative, but through a sustained attention to tension—between control and instability, persistence and change.
In recent years, she has extended her practice beyond painting into textiles, found objects, and everyday materials. Within this expanded field, mending operates not as repair, but as a form of negotiation—a repetitive act that neither restores nor resolves, but sustains conditions of incompleteness.
Her work engages with processes that cannot be reversed, only altered. What emerges is a space in which life persists through partial, fragile, and often futile acts of maintenance—where meaning resides not in resolution, but in continuation.
